The Platner Stool by Warren Platner for Knoll is among the defining pieces of a collection that earned its designer worldwide renown. Introduced in 1966, the Platner Collection is an icon of modern furniture, created by welding hundreds of curved steel rods to circular frames so that structure and ornament become one and the same.
Platner personally formulated the production techniques for these complex designs, with each piece requiring over a thousand welds and more than a hundred cylindrical steel rods. The stool’s shell is fibreglass with a moulded foam cushion that attaches with a concealed fixing; the base is plated steel rod, offered in a bright nickel finish with clear lacquer, a painted metallic bronze, and — since the collection’s fiftieth anniversary — an 18k gold finish.
