The Amanta 1 Seater by HAY, originally designed by Mario Bellini in 1966 and reissued by HAY, distils a groundbreaking approach to modular seating into a singular, sculptural form. As the foundational piece of the Amanta system, it embodies the bold spirit and refined innovation of mid-century Italian design, with ergonomic contours and generous proportions that balance comfort and architectural presence.
Its signature slotted shell is a defining visual element that enhances both strength and expression, while four spherical feet replace traditional legs to give a subtle elevation and a floating appearance. The shell is crafted from at least 99% post-consumer recycled ABS plastic and the cushions from 94% biomass-balanced foam, with all components designed for disassembly for durability and environmental responsibility.
Available in different shell colours with a variety of fabric and leather upholstery options, the Amanta 1 Seater works alone or locks seamlessly with further modules to build 2-, 3- or larger configurations — a timeless classic for domestic and public settings. The original design holds a place in the permanent collection of MoMA, New York.
